L'ingénieur du son Joe O'Herlihy
utilisa souvent cette expression pendant
le travail sur l'album à Berlin.
En fait l'expression vient du film
de Mel Brooks "The Producers", à propos
du making of de la comédie musicale "Springtime
for Hitler" qui eut un grand succès à Broadway.
Le titre final de l'album fut choisi de façon à ne pas être pris au sérieux, de façon à contrebalancer un peu le sérieux des paroles des chansons, et cela permit à U2 de se protéger contre l'attaque de critiques telles que celles qu'ils avaient subies à l'époque de Rattle and Hum. C'est encore une des preuves de leur recours à l'ironie.
The
Fly est une représentation de
la "rock star" la plus typique,
avec ses vêtements brillants en
cuir et ses grosses lunettes noires.
Ses excès et ses poses multiples
devant caméras et appareils photos
est sensé mettre en dérision
le monde du rock, devenu hypocrite, impersonnel,
et truqué.
Le second personnage, le Mirrobal Man,
est un télé-évangéliste.
Il porte des vêtements brillants et étincellants qui le
fond ressembler à une grosse boule à facettes (!). Il fut
utilisé lors de la tournée américaine pour parodier
les shows télévisés religieux très présents
aux Etats-Unis. C'est une représentation du diable.
Le dernier personnage est Mister MacPhisto, le plus populaire en Europe.
C'est une rock-star sur la fin, croisement hybride et contraction de
MacDonald's et Mephisto. Il représente encore plus explicitement
que Mirrorball Man le diable sur Terre.
(qui
laissait apparaitre en gros le sigle de U2 et en tout petit le nom de
l'artiste, laissant croire qu'il s'agissait là d'un disque de
U2) ainsi que l'utilisation sans autorisation de samples de U2 violant
de cette façon le copyright (Negativland maintenant de son côté que
les samples devaient être autorisés dans le sens où le
single était une parodie), et d'autres charges diverses.
Au bout du compte, SST et Negativland se séparèrent et payèrent des dommages, soient 90.000 dollars au total. La compagnie SST voulut faire payer toute la somme à Negativland qui n'accepta que la moitié; aucune entente ne fut trouvée et le groupe quitta ainsi SST Records. Peu après, Negativland sortit un CD et un magazine intitulé "The letter U and the numeral 2" (la lettre U et le numéro 2) expliquant l'histoire complète par le biais de coupures de presse, de documents officiels, et d'articles.
Finalement
l'important est peut-être d'avoir
l'opinion de U2 à ce sujet. Edge
fut d'ailleurs interviewé par
le magazine Mondo 2000, deux membres
de Negativland en profitant pour pendre
part à l'interview sans que le
guitariste ne soit au courant.
EDGE: D'après ce dont je me souviens, je ne peux pas me souvenir
du déroulement exact des événements, mais on nous
présenta cela de cette façon: "Voici le disque, voici
la pochette, Island est déjà sur l'affaire et ils vont
s'y opposer à cause du dessin de la pochette, à cause du
fait que beaucoup de gens attendent le nouvel album de U2"; ils
pensaient, d'un point de vue strictement commercial, qu'il y aurait des
chances que les gens voient ça dans un magasin et pensent "tiens,
le nouvel album de U2".
Il
fut en effet statistiquement démontré que le taux de cancer
dans la région était anormalement élevé,
et la centrale fut constamment soupçonnée de rejeter des
déchets toxiques dans la mer.
{MK} Greenpeace, accompagné de U2, décida de manifester contre l'utilisation de cette centrale et fit le voyage sur place, le groupe prenant des costumes anti-radiation pour l'occasion. Bono abima même, pour l'anecdote, ses chaussures en marchant dans de la boue contaminée.
Le groupe participa également à un concert "Stop Sellafiled" au G-Mex center de Manchester. Ils y jouèrent un show de Zoo TV. Ils furent notamment accompagnés de Public Enemy et de Bad II. Cette cause est également mentionnée dans la pochette d'Achtung Baby, par le biais des coordonnées de l'action "Shut Down Sellafield" de Greepeace.

"Ce mois-ci ils prirent part à une manifestation très médiatisée
de Greenpeace contre la centrale nucléaire de Sellafield, au nord-ouest
de l'Angleterre. Le projet d'organiser un concert sur le site a été rejeté par
le tribunal. Au lieu de cela, le groupe revêtit des costumes anti-radiation
et apporta sur les lieux de Sellafiled 2 des barils de boue soi-disant polluée
ramassée sur les plages irlandaises. 'Ils peuvent nous traiter de fous
s'ils le souhaitent, mais on ne peut pas avoir beaucoup de foi envers les politiques',
déclara Bono".

Quand on regarde bien la pochette de
Zooropa, on remarque des formes violettes
qui sont précisément
des lettres. Ces lettres sont des morceaux
de titres de chansons non terminées
par U2 et qui sortiront durant les
quatre années suivantes. Ces
inscriptions sont les suivantes :
- 2ème ligne - WAKEUPDE - en référence à Wake Up Dead Man
- 4ème ligne - ISSMEKILLM - en référence à Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
- 5ème ligne - ETDRESS - en référence à If You Wear That Velvet Dress
C'est ainsi qu'en plein Zoo TV, et pour 13 dates, des retransmissions en direct ont lieu depuis Sarajevo. Une pause en plein concert, pour montrer la réalité d'une guerre aux portes de l'Europe, à un public ébahi.
Les échanges sont surréalistes, merci à Golum qui a retranscrit ceux des 2 concerts londoniens d'août 1993.

We... we asked to go and play a gig in Sarajevo, a few weeks ago... and then we were told not to go, because things are getting so bad there. So anyway, we... we sent a satellite dish, down there, instead, just to try to keep in touch with some friends of ours we have down there, about what’s going on, see if huh... it reads the same as it does in the papers... on TV... Although they want to separate us into 3... diff... 3 nationality-countries... but we want to live together and we shall live together... for the rest of our lives. We’re still here and... stay here. “
- Oja : “ Good evening. My name is Oja. I’m Serb. I live in Sarajevo, with my parents... And I work as a lecturer in the newspaper house. Sarajevo is my native town... and the only town... where I want to live with my friends all nationalities. They kill us : Serbs, Muslims and Croats ; because we want to live together... So huh... Systematic rape, and... bombing of civilians and... It’s really complicated... The truth is : it’s just a bunch of fascists, tryin’ to divide up a small country around ethnic lines. And this smokescreen of complexity is just an excuse for politicians to do nothing... At night, we can hear them shouting, calling us abusing names... We can hear them singing songs about Great Serbia, and sometimes, it’s worse than sound of grenades and bullets... “
- Selma : “ 2 years ago, we were living like all teenagers : listening to music, going out ; we had schools, friends, plans for the future... now, we have shells, we have screams of children ; our schools are burned down. We’ll never see many of our friends, they are gone forever... You have read in your history books about fascism, the same one that destroyed your London, 50 years ago.
